The Great Southern region has 250km of the south coast bordering the Southern Ocean and boasts ancient mountain ranges, deep forests and breathtaking coastal scenery. The Great Southern region is known for its primary production, fishing, aquaculture, ecotourism and natural attractions.

There are currently three Community Response Committees established in the Great Southern.

  • Albany – The Albany CRC has been established for more than 12 months and has been implementing a range of AOD prevention activities in the community. The committee has developed an Alcohol-free Event booklet promoting activities in the Albany community that individuals and families can attend without alcohol. This booklet also includes information on the Australian Alcohol Guidelines, standard drink sizes, support services and tips on how to reduce your drinking. Following on from the booklet, the CRC has also been running weekly Drumming Circles each term and held an alcohol-free ‘Dry July’ Quiz Night fundraiser.
  • Albany Aboriginal Youth – The Aboriginal Youth CRC has been established in collaboration with the Kadadjiny Aboriginal Corporation in Albany. This CRC aims to provide diversionary programs for young people as well as develop youth-designed resources that promote education and awareness of youth support services for AOD and mental health. This CRC is implementing a ten-pin bowling school holiday and after school program for young people, as well as undertaking planning and development of a youth-designed polo shirt and bucket hat.
  • Denmark – The Denmark CRC was established earlier in 2025 and is in the process of developing their Community Response Plan of activities. This committee has a youth focus and hopes to provide programs in collaboration with the new youth hub being established in the community.

The Community Engagement Officer is currently meeting with stakeholders in Denmark, Kojonup, Katanning and Jerramungup regarding the potential establishment of Community Resource Committees in the region. If you are interested in being involved in a Community Response Committee in these communities, one of our established CRCs or would like to discuss potential opportunities in your local community, please contact Nikki on njackson@holyoake.org.au or 0422 294 909.
