The Kimberley region has six major townships and over 160 small remote Indigenous communities. The Kimberley experiences a sub-tropical climate, is one of the most remote and untouched ancient landscapes on earth and is home to many unique birds, mammals, reptiles and marine life.

There are currently two Community Response Committees established in the Kimberley.

Mabu Aamba West Kimberley Men’s Group –

  • Mabu Aamba is a men’s group established and run by Aarnja in Broome with men from across the Kimberley region being involved in group activities. Mabu Aamba has completed their Community Response Plan and aims to provide cultural education and support in relation to alcohol, drugs and mental health.
  • Mabu Aamba is currently implementing a multi-tiered program incorporating fortnightly masonry skill development programs, an on-Country camp and the design of the group’s polo with QR code linked to local support services.

Derby – The Derby CRC is currently working on their Community Connections and Support program that aims to raise awareness of local and regional support services for AOD related harms. The program will also focus on sharing the lived experience stories of community members in relation to their own or family members’ AOD use through video interviews to build confidence and connections with others that have been through similar challenges. Community members will share their experiences, barriers faced and ways to navigate these. Video interviews conducted by a local film maker will be collated into a short film along with posters and printed material for use in the community.

The Community Engagement Officer is currently meeting with stakeholders in Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Bidyadanga and the Dampier Peninsula regarding the potential establishment of Community Resource Committees in the region. If you are interested in being involved in a Community Response Committee in these communities, one of our established CRCs or would like to discuss potential opportunities in your local community, please contact Vennessa on vpoelina@holyoake.org.au or 0484 271 258.
