The ADAPT Through-Care Counselling program helps people in prisons in the Perth metro area address their alcohol and other drug (AOD) challenges and prepare for life outside prison.

About the program

This voluntary pre- and post-release program supports participants who want to address their use of alcohol and other drugs as they make the often challenging transition from living in the prison to living in the community. It’s designed to help people:

  • build an understanding of factors that lead to alcohol and drug use
  • transition back to the community
  • connect with others for support
  • build motivation to reach goals
  • make better decisions for themselves and those around them
  • learn positive social behaviours and prepare for life outside prison
  • see what’s possible and change their life for the better.

Participants in the program can attend up to six individual counselling sessions in prison in the three months prior to their release, and a minimum of six individual sessions in the community.

How it works

Anyone can participate in the program, whether completing their full sentence or applying for parole.

By signing up for Through-care Counselling, participants do not have to refer themselves again for counselling after their release, but they can continue to see the same counsellor.

Through-care Counselling is delivered in partnership with Cyrenian House at most prisons in the Perth metro area. If you know someone who could benefit from the service, please tell them to contact the Transitional Manager at their prison.
