Person Centred – In Everything We Do

Date of News: 31 October 2024

We are pleased to release our updated Holyoake Approach which now accurately reflects our strategic pivot into Mental Health supports.

Founded on five key principles, The Holyoake Approach puts the person at the centre of everything we do and recognises that the interaction between the person, clinician, support network and evidence based practice is central to our approach.

In late 2023 the organisation commenced a piece of work to review the Holyoake Approach, enabling our workforce to provide feedback on the Approach holistically via staff workshops and working committee meetings. Members of our Board were also involved in the review and we acknowledge and thank everyone for their contributions to this project.

It was vital to the review process that the 2024 Holyoake Approach was not drastically altered, respecting the work done by those past which has resulted in strong similarities between the old and new versions. It was also important that the commitment and dedication of our staff was recognised through the inclusion of references to our IHCA AOD and Mental Health accreditations.

The three rings on the new Approach represent The What (AOD and Mental Health), The How (Five Key Principles), and The Why (central diagram). A key change to the Approach is the inclusion of the terms ‘Alcohol and Other Drugs’ and ‘Mental Health’ on the outer ring to illustrate the service streams we operate in. In addition, we have added a fourth element (Person) to the central diagram to highlight their centrality in our work whilst also updating the reference of ‘Counsellor’ to ‘Clinician’.

Our evidence-based approach has also been split into ‘Therapeutic Interventions’ and ‘Ways of Working’ with the following approaches added: ‘Solutions Focused Therapy’ ‘Prevention’, ‘Carer Recognition’, ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ and ‘Recovery Oriented Support’.

Finally, the review examined our five key principles, resulting in a definition update to ‘Connection’ and a change from ‘Peer Inspiration’ to ‘Valuing Lived Experience’.

The Holyoake Approach is our true point of difference and pivotal to how we support people, whenever they’re ready.
